Lebanon County, established on February 16, 1813, was formed from parts of Dauphin and Lancaster counties. Its early settlers were primarily German agriculturalists, attracted by the fertile limestone soil reminiscent of their homeland along the Rhine River. The county seat, Lebanon, originally known as Steitztown, was founded by George Steitz and later renamed in 1758.
